Kristie-Lee Laskes

Esthetician / Owner

Why did you become an esthetician?

While attending college, I was introduced to Mary Kay (my neighbor had the pink cadillac!) and I fell in love with make-up, skin care and helping women look their best. As time went on, I knew that I wanted to be more hands on within the field so I enrolled at the Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics of Woburn, graduating with my esthetics license in 2004.

What made you want to open a salon?

Upon graduating, I gained some experience at a few smaller salons until I was hired at a much larger and successful salon here in Worcester. After spending a number of years there, I again advanced my career by opening a salon with a friend which would allow us to provide a better and more personal experience for our clients. Since the beginning of my career I always knew that I wanted to open my own business and it felt like something was missing. I wanted to provide both my clients and employees with a salon environment that they loved being at and felt comfortable in. In May of 2011, I opened Nkd’s first location in downtown Worcester. Thanks to our wonderful clients and our reputation of providing quality services, Nkd has grown into what it is today at its third location on Grove Street.

What is your favorite service that Nkd offers and why?

My favorite service at Nkd is, well, all of them! Ok, so my favorites are waxing, lashes and makeup…those are the services I love to do, so that is why I named my business Nkd Waxing, Lashes & Makeup! We also offer skincare, massage, microblading and hair…those are services that the other girls love to do and obviously works with the original vision. A client can tell when the person working on them loves what they do. And I greatly enjoy getting all those services done to me!

If you would bring just one beauty product on vacation, which one would it be?

If I could only bring one beauty product on vacation with me…it would probably be lip gloss because I would have gotten my lashes and spray tan on…so there wouldn't be a need for mascara, foundation and bronzer. :)

What is your "mantra?"

My Mantra is The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Crystal Whittemore

Esthetician / Manager

Why did you become an esthetician?

I’ve been in the beauty industry since the womb ;) My mom had a salon in our house when I was a toddler and then when she started working at a salon in Worcester, I would frequently go in with her and sit behind the desk and help the receptionist. After completing my Associates Degree, I attended esthetics school in 2004 and have worked in the beauty industry ever since. I love the variety of what I do- I could never sit behind a desk all day or work a 9 to 5. Some days I make people feel amazing doing makeup, some days I get to pamper people with facials and other days I give people gorgeous lashes! The creative atmosphere of Nkd is the best place to foster my love of all things beauty and years later, I still love what I do!

Helping others with their issues whether it be muscle or cancer related, is where I feel at my best and has motivated me to create a nonprofit for oncology massage.
